Here\u2019s some of our standout work from this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><strong>Politics and redistricting tools<\/strong><\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The year started with a contentious legislative session. Senior developer <a href=\"www.texastribune.org\/about\/staff\/carla-astudillo\/\">Carla Astudillo<\/a> helped break down the much anticipated votes for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/01\/14\/texas-house-speaker-vote-breakdown\/\">House speaker <\/a>and the debate over major <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/04\/17\/texas-house-voucher-vote-breakdown-2025\/\">school voucher<\/a> legislation. In April, the state released A-F ratings for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/04\/24\/texas-schools-a-f-accountability-ratings\/\">the first time<\/a> in five years, followed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/08\/15\/texas-a-f-school-district-accountability-ratings-lookup\/\">updated figures<\/a> in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This month, the state released new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/12\/18\/texas-college-completion-income-gap\/\">higher education outcomes data<\/a>, which tracks the long-term success of eighth grade students who enrolled in Texas public schools a decade ago. Designer\/developer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/author\/alex-ford\/\">Alex Ford<\/a> created an interactive visualization showing how socioeconomically disadvantaged students are more likely to drop out.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<figure class=\"wp-block-newspack-blocks-iframe alignwide\">\n\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\" style=\"height:600px; width:100%;\">\n\t\t\t<iframe id=\"newspack-iframe-accg9r1GvDET\" layout=\"responsive\" height=\"100\" width=\"100\" src=\"https:\/\/graphics.texastribune.org\/graphics\/cohorts-sankey-v2-2025-12\/graphic\/\" style=\"height: 600px; width: 100%;\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/figure>\n\t\n\n\n<p>Health data reporter <a href=\"www.texastribune.org\/author\/dan-keemahill\/\">Dan Keemahill<\/a> helped cover local school boards. He partnered with reporters on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/series\/texas-tribune-propublica\/\">Texas Tribune-ProPublica investigative unit<\/a> to examine how some conservative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/03\/19\/texas-school-boards-richardson-keller-at-large-voting-system\/\">special interest groups<\/a> in Texas are leveraging at-large voting systems to influence what students learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Public health and disease outbreaks<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our team also devoted significant time to covering contagious diseases this year, including reporting on the five-year anniversary of the COVID pandemic. Former designer\/developer Yuriko Schumacher visualized how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/05\/01\/texas-hispanics-covid-19-deaths\/\">Hispanic Texans embraced vaccines<\/a>, which helped save lives. She also helped track the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/04\/22\/texas-measles-outbreak-update\/\">spread of measles<\/a> across the state, and Keemahill analyzed longer-term vaccination <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/08\/18\/texas-school-vaccination-budget-cuts\/\">trends<\/a> in Texas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/10\/13\/texas-schools-vaccines-measles-delinquencies\/\">schools<\/a>. Keemahill visualized how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/10\/28\/texas-snap-food-stamps-federal-shutdown-explained-2\/\">millions of Texans<\/a> saw their SNAP benefits cut after the federal government shut down and how this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/10\/30\/texas-snap-food-assistance-greg-abbott\/\">disproportionately impacted<\/a> the Rio Grande Valley. He and Wu also showed that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/10\/31\/texas-aca-premiums-health-insurance\/\">steep increases<\/a> in Affordable Care Act premiums hit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/08\/21\/texas-health-insurance-premiums-aca-tax-credit-expiration\/\">rural areas<\/a> particularly hard.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<figure class=\"wp-block-newspack-blocks-iframe\">\n\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\" style=\"height:600px; width:100%;\">\n\t\t\t<iframe id=\"newspack-iframe-yKfSHQimbVSP\" layout=\"responsive\" height=\"100\" width=\"100\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/G0Dt4\/1\/\" style=\"height: 600px; width: 100%;\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/figure>\n\t\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Water shortages <\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As lawmakers debated whether to invest billions into the state\u2019s water system, Astudillo and Schumacher collaborated with reporters on the regions team to examine the state\u2019s looming water crisis. This included a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/03\/13\/texas-water-explained-supply-demand\/\">visual explainer<\/a> and an interactive lookup tool that allows readers to see how severe shortages are expected to be, along with information on how to get involved. Wu illustrated the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/07\/09\/hill-country-texas-flooding-2025-graphics\/\">nearly 20 camps<\/a> clustered around the Guadalupe River near where the flooding occurred and also showed how historically extreme the July 4 floods were.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\t<figure class=\"wp-block-newspack-blocks-iframe\">\n\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\" style=\"height:600px; width:100%;\">\n\t\t\t<iframe id=\"newspack-iframe-r1JBt8B3DH5z\" layout=\"responsive\" height=\"100\" width=\"100\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/w03Ia\/\" style=\"height: 600px; width: 100%;\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/figure>\n\t\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Undocumented coverage and ICE arrests<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We also contributed to a range of immigration-focused stories this year. Early on, Schumacher created several charts that broke down who the nearly 2 million undocumented Texans are and how the population has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/02\/17\/texas-undocumented-immigrants-trump-deportation-demographics\/\">remained largely stagnant<\/a> over time. In the summer, Ford and Wu supported a story about a Houston mother facing deportation by producing a diagram that illustrates how the case impacts her family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In November, Astudillo crunched federal data for a story documenting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/11\/03\/texas-trump-immigration-crackdown-ice-arrests-deportation\/\">sharp increase<\/a> in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrests under President Donald Trump. She created multiple charts for the story, including one that shows an increasing number of people being arrested have no criminal convictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<figure class=\"wp-block-newspack-blocks-iframe alignfull\">\n\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\" style=\"height:600px; width:100%;\">\n\t\t\t<iframe id=\"newspack-iframe-jggQZIcfMBSg\"
